Located at 3628 - 5th Ave. in Port Alberni, the Sobering Site is operated on a 24/7 basis by the Port Alberni Shelter Society under a contractual agreement with Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA).
The site provides a short-term stay (24 hours maximum) for individuals intoxicated with substances such as alcohol and/or other drugs to begin the sobering process. Connections are offered with outreach programs dealing in substance abuse and addictions, medical recovery, general health issues, and harm reduction programs. One of the additional aims of the Sobering Site is to reduce congestion at West Coast General Hospital, and reduce the use of emergency first responder services in general (Police, Fire, Ambulance).
